DARTMOUTH — More details are being released about the fatal car crash that killed UMass Dartmouth freshman Frank Petillo, Jr. on Thursday evening.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office said UMass Dartmouth campus police were called to the scene of a crash involving a motor vehicle and a pedestrian at around 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

Officers arrived to find a 19-year-old student — named as Frank Petillo, Jr. by university chancellor Mark Fuller in a communication Thursday night — lying on Ring Road with "significant injuries," according to the D.A.'s office.

Petillo was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The student driver who struck Petillo remained at the scene with the gray Honda Accord that was involved in the crash.

State Police assigned to the D.A.'s office as well as troopers with the accident reconstruction unit are investigating.

No further information is being released, the D.A.'s office stated.

The D.A.'s office named the student as Frankie Portillo. It is currently unclear which is the correct spelling of his name.
