It has been a Mattapoisett tradition for nearly 50 years, but it is open to children and parents from anywhere.

Our family's involvement with the Mattapoisett Track Club is one of the fondest memories we have from when our kids were little.

We started both of our kids with the Mattapoisett Track Club when they were 3, and it was such a benefit to them both. From "duck, duck, goose" to track meets, it was the kids' first exposure to organized sport. More importantly, it taught them basic skills of socialization.

Admittedly, just as important was the social interaction among the young, mostly inexperienced parents. I clearly remember looking forward to bringing the kids to track nights. It was so nice to talk with other moms and dads going through some of the same things we were going through as we tried to navigate those first few tricky years of parenting.

If you are part of a young family from anywhere on the SouthCoast, I couldn't recommend this program enough.

The program also gives high school students and track athletes the chance to coach and help with childcare.

This will be the program's inaugural season with Old Rochester Regional High School's brand-new track.

The cost is $80 per child.
