UPDATE — Unconfirmed scanner reports indicate that the suspect is now in custody, as of just after 11 a.m. Friday.

MATTAPOISETT — Mattapoisett residents may be hearing a helicopter or getting phone alerts as state and local police search for a suspect involved in a chase and car crash earlier Friday morning.

A Mattapoisett police dispatcher confirmed that many of the town's officers are out on the manhunt.

Meanwhile a Mattapoisett resident confirmed receipt of a "code red" phone message warning residents about authorities conducting the search around North Street and I-195.

The message — as well as unconfirmed scanner reports — both stated that the suspect has lost a shoe.

Flight scanners confirm scanner reports that a state police Air Wing helicopter is currently involved in the search.

Although the reports have yet to be confirmed by law enforcement, scanner reports starting at around 5 a.m. Friday noted that Mattapoisett police were chasing two suspects, first on foot and later in a white vehicle, in Mattapoisett town center.

The suspect vehicle eventually crashed near the North Street interchange with I-195 and the suspects fled on foot, according to the unconfirmed reports.

One of the male suspects was later caught by a K9, but the search for the second suspect continues.

Messages requesting information from state and Mattapoisett police have yet to be answered.

No further details are yet known.
