Massachusetts State Police Cracking Down on Fireworks

With Independence Day quickly approaching, Massachusetts State Police have been cracking down on people crossing over to New Hampshire and Rhode Island to buy fireworks and bring them back to the Bay State, where possession is illegal.

Tens of thousands of dollars' worth of fireworks were seized in Massachusetts over the weekend.

On Friday night, troopers from the Department’s Division of Investigative Services and Firearms and Explosives Investigation Unit stopped several drivers who had crossed the state line to purchase fireworks and were transporting them back to Massachusetts.

Seven people were issued summonses to appear in court to face charges of illegal possession of fireworks. Troopers seized approximately 425 fireworks worth roughly $8,000. Many fireworks, including aerial shells, cakes, large rockets, fountains, sparklers and Roman candles were seized, among others.

Troopers had an even bigger take on Saturday, seizing more than $10,000 worth of fireworks and 34 packs of firecrackers containing a total of 17,337 individual firecrackers. Six people were summonsed to appear in court to face charges.

Another operation on Sunday yielded more than $10,000 of fireworks seizures five people were summonsed, having been accused of trying to sneak the fireworks into Massachusetts.

Massachusetts is the last state in the union to completely ban the public from possessing or lighting off fireworks, with the concern being about the number of fires and injuries that are caused by their use.
