Halloween is coming and folks will shell out a lot of money to celebrate this year. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), "Halloween spending in 2024 is expected to reach $11.6 billion."

The NRF says 72 percent of Americans plan to celebrate Halloween this year and spend an average of $104. That's up slightly from last year.

Halloween revelers could spend $3.8 billion on decorations, $3.5 on candy, a half billion dollars on Halloween greeting cards and $3.8 billion on costumes.

Halloween costumes have changed a lot over the years. Gone are the days of ghost, hobo or cowboy costumes made from materials already in the home. Those little plastic face masks with air and sight holes were always a gas.

Today's Halloween costumes can be more sophisticated—some Halloween costumes hawk products, turning you or your children into walking billboards. The Massachusetts-based Dunkin' Donuts has entered the Halloween costume game. The company's website says, "Customers can also celebrate in style with a limited quantity return of Dunkin's wildly popular DunKings tracksuits." The tracksuits "made famous in Dunkin's Super Bowl LVIII ad" are back "in three versions for Halloween." A jacket and pants set will set you back $120. That's a lot of donuts. New DunKids Tracksuits sell as a set for $80. The new DunKings Costume Set for adults is $44.99. I thought Halloween costumes were supposed to be scary. What's so scary about wearing a Dunkin' Donuts tracksuit - besides the price? I dunno. This Halloween stuff has just gotten too complicated and commercial for me. I think I'll just join Linus in the pumpkin patch and wait for the Great Pumpkin this year, with my Pumpkin Spice Cold Brew, of course.
