Massachusetts and Rhode Island Apple Picking Guide for a Fun Day
Around this time of year, apple picking is definitely a top contender on the fall festivity list.
If you have experienced apple picking, you know how exciting it can be. All over Rhode Island and Massachusetts, you will surely find an orchard farm perfect for your next adventure.
Dartmouth Orchards is a fan favorite for SouthCoast locals to PYO apples. Noquochoke Orchard in Westport is another spot enjoyed, along with Pocasset Orchards in Fall River, to name a few. The list is endless.
Personally, I've only been part of this fall tradition a handful of times. Although those experiences created lifelong memories, I remember how intentional you had to be while in the orchard.
As fun as it is, some rules must be respected. These rules may look different depending on where you go, but specific guidelines are implemented to help make your apple-picking experience enjoyable for everyone.
To help prepare for the apple-picking season, here are some things to be mindful of as you head out. Whether it's your first or 100th time, brushing up on some tips never hurts.
Apple Picking Do's And Dont's
Dress Appropriately: There will be a lot of walking, so wear comfortable clothes for outdoor activities.
Check the Apples for Ripeness: Don't be afraid to inspect the apples for any significant damage. Look for the right size; this will most likely be the juiciest.
Bring Your Own Basket: Some places might provide bags or baskets, but bringing your own is always a good idea. Another tip: adding some soft padding will help prevent bruising.
Stay on the Designated Path: Be aware of where you're walking. Be respectful of any signs that the orchard may have posted.
Pluck Apples Carefully: A gentle twist or tug should do the trick!
Bring a Camera and Picnic Basket: The best memories are captured on film. Some places also have picnic tables to relax and enjoy a snack or the apples you just picked.
Only Pick What You Plan to Take Home: Overpicking apples is a huge waste. They are often discarded on the ground if people don't want them.
Do Not Climb the Trees: It is highly discouraged, even if you're an avid tree climber.
Do Not Shake or Hit the Trees: Doing this can damage the trees.
Do Not Rush: Take your time, have fun and enjoy the beautiful scenery.
