Marion Fire Crew Responds to Garbage Truck Engulfed in Flames
MARION (WBSM) — Marion firefighters responded to a garbage truck fire Thursday afternoon.
At around 12:37 p.m. on July 18, fire crews were dispatched to the intersection of Front Street and Washburn Park Road.
Upon arrival, crews discovered the garbage truck, fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG) and engulfed by flames.
A preliminary investigation indicated that the fire started in the engine compartment and then spread to the hopper, thereby exposing the CNG tanks located on the vehicle's roof to increased temperature.
There were no injuries.

Marion firefighters maintained a safe distance and successfully put out the flames. They said the primary objectives were firefighter safety, preventing the rupture of the CNG tanks, and protecting exposures.
