Buzzards Bay Family Thrilled to Be a Part of Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds Christmas Movie ‘Spirited’
A Buzzards Bay couple anxiously awaited the premiere of the new holiday movie Spirited, starring Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, not just to watch two comedic superstars but to see their jewelry get some screen time.
Chris and Kelly Christopulous of Mardigan’s Maile were chosen to create a custom piece for one of the characters in this new holiday flick, now in theatres and streaming on Apple TV.
Mardigan’s Maile in Buzzard’s Bay
What started as a hobby in the '90s turned into a full-blown business for Chris and Kelly Christopulos.
Specializing in medieval jewelry, Mardigan’s Maile handcrafts high-quality, stainless steel chainmail jewelry and armor, as well as modern pieces. If you have ever taken a trip to a renaissance fair, chances are you have come across this talented duo.
Over a year ago, they received a phone call for what seemed to be a typical order, but it turned out to be a bit more exciting than that.
Creating The Perfect Piece for a Movie
“We got an email saying, ‘Need a Belt ASAP,’ with a phone number,” Kelly said. “We gave them a call and the woman said she was part of a costume design team for a movie being filmed in Boston, but that’s all we knew.”
Due to non-disclosure agreements, the woman remained extremely vague, but one thing was very clear: Mardigan’s Maile was in the running to be on the big screen.
Chris and Kelly soon learned that the company was in need of a chained belt for The Ghost of Christmas Future.
“(The production company) looked at our website, picked out two (belts) that they liked, and told how big the character was, which was 7 feet tall,” Kelly said.
The company decided to purchase a few belts, and for the next year-and-a-half, the Christopuloses were forced to remain tight-lipped until the movie was released.
Mardigan’s Gets Screen Time in Spirited
Chris and Kelly did not see the character until the movie debuted on Apple TV on Nov. 18. The Ghost of Christmas Future can be seen wearing one of Mardigan’s Black Jet AB BT7 handcrafted belts. The character is played by former NBA player Loren Woods and voiced by comedian Tracy Morgan.
It was an exciting moment for the local jewelers who have been at their craft for almost 30 years.
