Wareham Police arrest a man during an attempted bank robbery.

Chief Kevin Walsh says that on Tuesday police received an anonymous tip regarding a man who was planning to rob a bank that day during an unspecified time and at unspecified place.

Banks in the area were notified as detectives and patrol officers patrolled bank locations throughout Wareham.

At around 12:30 p.m. further anonymous information was provided about a possible suspect walking in the area of the Cranberry Plaza on Route 6 & Route 28.

A detective then observed a man walk into the Rockland Trust Bank and the detective followed the man inside.

The suspect, identified as 67-year-old Robert Murphy of #2875 Cranberry Hwy. in Wareham, was observed handing a teller a note that instructed cash be handed over to avoid anyone being hurt.

Murphy was then quickly apprehended without commotion and nobody at the scene was injured.

Walsh says Murphy is being charged with Unarmed Assault with Intent to Rob and is currently being held at Wareham Police Headquarters, pending further investigation and court procedures.
