Lakeville and Fairhaven Police Bust Up Dirt Bike Stealing Spree

A weekend dirt bike stealing bonanza was cut short over the weekend thanks to a quick thinking victim and two SouthCoast area police departments.

Tyler Tiernan says he was awake for some reason at 2:30 in the morning on Saturday when he noticed a slow moving car in his neighborhood that stopped in front of his home.  The motion detector in his shed went off and triggered his security cameras.  "I couldn't believe my eyes, someone was in my shed trying to steal my dirt bikes."

Tiernan says he called 911 and followed police directions to stay safely inside.  When police showed up, they ran through his neighbors' yards and got away.  "They peeled out like a movie.  It was wild."

But the thieves weren't done for the night.

Next, they decided to hit up a home in Lakeville that was also storing dirt bikes in the garage.  Coincidentally, the Lakeville victim is friends with Tiernan.  His security cameras alerted him that there were intruders in his garage, however he was up in Maine, so he called Tiernan for assistance.

Tiernan called Lakeville Police who ended up following one of the dirt bikes equipped with an Apple air tag (GPS tracker) into New Bedford.  Lakeville PD recovered both of the stolen dirt bikes and tracked down the car and driver they believe was in front of Tiernan's home earlier that night.  Lakeville Police say they arrested 18-year-old Aidan Amaral at the scene.  The investigation into the second suspect is still active.

Fairhaven Police say they are attempting to tie the two crimes together, but the break in is still under investigation.  Police did see a vehicle leaving the scene in Fairhaven that resembles the vehicle that was discovered in New Bedford after the Lakeville incident.

Tiernan believes the thieves may have staked out local races and either followed the victims home or dropped air tags in their trailers or trucks.  "They're brazen, that's for sure," said Tiernan.
