Martha's Vineyard Man Scores 'Jaws' Winning Ticket in Edgartown

Back in March, the Massachusetts State Lottery launched the Jaws instant ticket game in honor of the classic’s 50^th anniversary.

Two lucky winners have been crowned so far, and over the weekend, a Martha’s Vineyard native joined the winner’s circle.

Gecimar Silva of Tisbury is the third $1 million prize winner in the Jaws instant ticket game, and he has a convenience store in Edgartown to thank for the lucky ticket.

Silva has lived on Martha’s Vineyard for 18 years. Since Jaws was filmed on the island he calls home, Silva was interested in the new lottery game and bought a ticket at Depot Market on Upper Main Street, Edgartown.

Good thing he did. Silva claimed his prize on Friday and chose to receive a one-time payment of $650,000 before taxes.

He may live in a vacation spot, but Silva has not gone on a trip in 30 years and looks forward to using his winnings toward a trip to Florida.

The good news is there are still three more chances to win $1 million. There is also a series of five Second Chance Drawings in which a total of 30 lucky winners will be awarded a Jaws-inspired trip for two to Martha’s Vineyard in the summer of 2025.

The 30 winners will then participate in a Jaws-themed game show, during which one contestant will walk away with $1 million. All other contestants will have chances to win prizes ranging from $500 to $10,000.

Trip winners are randomly selected from non-winning tickets submitted into Second Chance Drawings.

A ferry ride to and from the island, plus island transportation
Daily breakfast
Welcome toast/dinner with entertainment at Harbor View Hotel
