Massachusetts Voted Best State to Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

There's no better place to be than in Boston for St. Patrick's Day.

You may have gone to the parades, or maybe raised a glass in the wee hours of the day's arrival.  If you have, you know how much fun that can be, and now, according to a new study, it's been voted the best state to celebrate everything Irish.

The study was based on the popularity of St. Patrick's Day events by finding the number of Google keywords searched, among other factors.

New England Has a Lot of Irish

Why does New England celebrate St. Patrick's Day so much?  It only makes sense that it has to do with who lives here.

According to the World Population Review, Massachusetts is second only to New Hampshire for residents of Irish heritage in the country.

In fact, the remaining New England states (Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut) are at the top of the list, along with Pennsylvania.

Why Do We Drink So Much on St. Patrick's Day?

Years-long traditions of opening up the pubs super early in the morning have become normal, but why do we drink so much on St. Patrick's Day?

According to my Catholic school lay teacher, Miss Jennifer, the day is set aside to honor the Saint who brought Christianity to the people.  Since it falls within the season of Lent, traditionally a season of abstinence, it's the only day Catholics can eat and drink whatever they want.

The next time Catholics can go back to eating and drinking to excess is Easter.
