Recent ICE Operations in Massachusetts
Operation Patriot netted 1,461 "illegal aliens" in Massachusetts in May 2025, followed by Operation Patriot 2.0, which snared another 1,400 in September.
According to ICE, almost 1,400 of the detainees had "significant criminal convictions or pending criminal charges for crimes committed in the United States or were known foreign fugitives."
Political Backlash from Beacon Hill
Massachusetts politicians who offered glib and snarky responses to ICE operations last year are going bat-crap crazy over the possibility of additional enforcement, particularly in light of the rioting in Minneapolis.
During a news conference, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey referred to ICE tactics as "cruel and callous behavior." In December, Healey demanded that ICE stop deportations from Massachusetts.
Federal vs. State Immigration Tensions
State House News Service reported Healey claims that residents are avoiding leaving their houses – not going to work, school, doctor's appointments, or court – because they are afraid of ICE.
Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell told Boston Public Radio station GBH that ICE actions are "egregious attacks."

While appearing on MS NOW, Massachusetts U.S. Senator Ed Markey called for Congress to defund ICE and "begin an impeachment proceeding of (Department of Homeland Security Secretary) Kristi Noem."
In the spring, the Trump Administration's "Border Czar" Tom Homan threatened Boston Mayor Michelle Wu with arrest for refusing to cooperate with federal immigration officials.
