100 SouthCoast Scholarships Worth Over Half a Million Dollars

It's a stressful time for high school seniors and their families. College acceptances are starting to trickle in across the SouthCoast, but getting into a college is only the first part of the equation. The deciding factor is often whether or not a family can afford to send their child to college.

Luckily, a number of scholarships are available to SouthCoast students.

National scholarships are nice, and they tend to be for bigger money, but they are extremely competitive. Luckily, there is a way for SouthCoast students to apply for up to 100 different local scholarships.

If you are a graduating high school senior here on the SouthCoast, or even a current college student, you are eligible to apply for more than $500,000 worth of locally based scholarship money.

The announcement was made Wednesday by the SouthCoast Community Foundation, a New Bedford-based non-profit that serves the region through philanthropy.

There will be more than 100 scholarship opportunities for which local students can apply. The foundation will award scholarships of up to $35,000 for qualifying students.

The good news is that students and families can apply for all of the scholarships in one convenient online location. If you or someone you know is interested in applying for one of these local scholarships, simply click the SouthCoast Community Foundation for more information.

The application window will open Jan. 9. Most applications will be accepted until March 1, but deadlines may vary. All letters of recommendation and transcripts must be completed by the deadline.

Students should be prepared to submit the following information:

FAFSA report and your expected family contribution
Personal essays
Letter of recommendation
Transcript of grades including name, school name and grade point average

Since 1995, the SouthCoast Community Foundation has distributed over $50 million from more than 200 funds to humanitarian, educational and cultural organizations on the SouthCoast.

The foundation acts as a liaison, matching donors and resources with community needs.
