Housing Developments Now Monitored 24/7 at New Bedford’s Three Police Stations

NEW BEDFORD - Security measures at New Bedford's public housing developments are being streamlined.

Through a collaboration with the New Bedford Housing Authority, the New Bedford Police Department now receives real-time surveillance footage from housing developments throughout the city at each of the city's police stations.

Lt. Amos Melo tells WBSM News, prior to the update, if the police department needed to look at video from a certain housing development, it would take some time. "We would go through Housing to obtain the footage at a later date, as they have cameras rolling all the time," said Melo. "Now, the advantage to this is we're going to have more eyes on the property at any given time."

Surveillance footage can be viewed by desk officers at the North and South End stations, as well as downtown. They can also rewind footage to more closely review any questionable activity.
