Holiday Wish Provides Bicycle For Girl With Spina Bifida
This season, Fun 107 teamed up with the United Way of Greater New Bedford to help bring a bit of light to Southcoast families who've had a trying year this year.
They were lined up at the front door of Fun 107 while the Rock and Fox show was still on the air. People from all walks of life...taking time out of their busy schedules to help Amalya get a bicycle her mother never thought she'd own.
Amalya, a 5 year old New Bedford girl with Spina Bifida, has a Christmas Wish. Her wish was to ride bikes with her brother and sister. Now, thanks to a group of Fun 107 fans and sponsors, that wish is going to happen.
As mentioned on-air, the special-order bike is not covered by any insurance and getting the bike would cost a family upwards of $3,500 out of pocket.
Fortunately, we are blessed to have amazing listeners and business leaders in our community and it wasn't long before they jumped in to help. Listeners and business from all over the Southcoast dropped off cash and checks yesterday to raise enough money to buy Amalya her special bike. Flavia from Avalon Medical Spa in New Bedford immediately donated $2,000 towards the purchase, prompting the Wash House Salon to donate $1500 and Dana from Kia of Dartmouth to kick an additional $1,000 needed for the child's custom-engineered bicycle. Not wanting the siblings to feel left out, the Pickup family from Care Free Homes chipped in with a Toys R' Us gift card to purchase new bikes for the other two children.
