This is not a happy holiday story. CARE (Center for Animal Rescue and Education) Southcoast is a no-kill shelter/adoption center for abandoned cats and dogs.

It stays open by the hard work of volunteers and by the public's generous donations.   The cost to keep the shelter open is over $5,000 a month.  Sometimes there are unplanned expenses, such as needed surgery for the animals.

But sometime late Monday night, someone broke into the Hathaway Road center, ripped a metal cash box off the wall,  stole up to $1,500 in cash and checks, and took heartworm and flea and tick medications, valued at about $500.

Thank God no animals were harmed.  Police are investigating, but there are currently no supects.   The shelter will change all the locks, repair the window that was broken by the robber, and upgrade the security system.  This has all been very sad for the volunteers to spend many hours to care for these abandoned cats and dogs.

Those of us who wish to make a donation to CARE Southcoast, can do it online at caresouthcoast.com or by mail, 596 Hathaway Road, New Bedford, MA 02740.
