NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) —Firefighters responded to a home on Shawmut Avenue for a garage fire that broke out Sunday night.

According to the fire department, six people were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The fire started at 6 p.m. when firefighters arrived at 760 Shawmut Avenue.

Fire crews reported heavy smoke and fire coming from the corner of the building, which was an attached garage in the home.

Firefighters were able to contain the flames by 8 p.m. All residents were out of the building safely.

There were no reported injuries of firefighters, residents or pets.

The NBFD Fire Investigation Unit is continuing the investigation into the fire.
