Christopher Melancon loves remote control cars. When he was in eighth grade at Normandin Middle School, he accidentally dropped a battery from one of the cars onto his toe. His family didn’t think much of it. At worst, they assumed it might be a break, and there’s not much that can be done for a broken toe.

However, after more than nine months of persistent pain, Christopher’s mom, Nicole, decided to have it checked out by an orthopedist. After a thorough examination, the doctor looked at Nicole and said, “I’m not saying this is cancer, but I think you should visit an oncologist.”

Stunning Diagnosis

Nicole was stunned. Cancer seemed unimaginable. Still, they brought Christopher to Boston for an MRI. After reviewing the results, doctors recommended a biopsy. The biopsy came back positive for cancer.

“Who gets toe cancer?” Nicole asked in disbelief. “I’ve never even heard of that! Only my son!” she said with a touch of humor.

In April, Christopher was diagnosed with a very rare form of cancer called Ewing sarcoma, an aggressive bone cancer that required intensive biweekly chemotherapy and the amputation of his toe. In addition to chemotherapy, Christopher needs regular labs, echocardiograms, physical therapy, and transfusions.

Christopher's Appetite

The chemotherapy has made it difficult for Christopher to maintain his weight, as he’s constantly battling nausea. His food preferences have shifted dramatically—once favoring Celia’s chicken, then Salonika’s steak sandwiches, and now, he craves McDonald’s vanilla shakes.

Nicole has had to significantly reduce her work hours to care for Christopher’s health needs. The family’s income has been severely impacted, and Christmas this year won’t be possible without support from the community.
