When it comes to eggnog, I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve actually had it: twice.

However, neither time was just casual sips from a holiday glass. No, they were intense, high-stakes chugging challenges for clout, for bragging rights, and with whole lot of stomach regret.

Each time? One full quart, downed in 15 to 20 seconds.

The First Chug: December 21, 2016

The first time I ever tasted eggnog was on my 29th birthday, December 21, 2016. It wasn’t exactly a celebratory toast. Instead, I was challenged to see if I could chug a quart of eggnog faster than a 10-year-old who had set a record of 20 seconds somewhere in Ohio.

“Easy peasy,” I thought, unaware of the gut-wrenching aftermath that awaited me.

With the stopwatch ticking, I crushed that kid’s record, finishing somewhere between 16 and 18 seconds. I don’t remember the exact time, but I do remember the glory of dethroning the champion from Ohio. Victory never tasted so… eggy.

The Return: December 5, 2024

Fast forward eight years to December 5, 2024. After nearly a decade of recovery from my first chug, I decided it was time to relive the madness. This time, I had a worthy opponent: our Fun 107 intern from Greater New Bedford Voc-Tech, Aidan Buck.

Now, Buck isn’t someone you take lightly. Standing at six-foot-five, he’s got both height and an appetite for competition. With his full consent and a quart of golden eggnog in each of our hands, we prepared for the showdown.

Michael Rock counted us down:
“3… 2… 1… Chug!”

Caps flew off, and we were off to the races. The eggnog flowed smoothly at first, and I could already taste victory. I was on pace to shatter my previous record. But then – disaster.

An air bubble hit me hard, forcing me to pause and regroup before my stomach staged a full revolt. Meanwhile, Buck powered on.

With only a few drops in my beard and sheer determination in my heart, I pushed through. I managed to finish the quart just shy of 20 seconds, narrowly claiming victory over my formidable intern.

Watch for yourself:

An Odd Tradition Is Born

Was it a flawless victory? Not quite. Was it worth it? Debatable.

This year’s challenge might have been a personal triumph, but it sparked something bigger: a potential tradition. Who knows? There could be more challengers somewhere on the SouthCoast (or even beyond) eager to dethrone the eggnog champ, or maybe we’ll even turn it into an annual event with prizes (besides the inevitable stomachache).

Stay tuned. There just might be one final eggnog chug before the year is over. Think you’ve got what it takes?

Challenge: 10 Tempting Holiday Uses For Eggnog

The first time I tried eggnog, it was spiked, and I found myself literally enjoying a cup of holiday cheer. That said, eggnog doesn't have to be spiked to be enjoyed. It doesn't have to be homemade or poured from a carton and drunk. It can be used as a wet ingredient, replacing milk and spicing up any holiday menu, especially for sweet treats and breakfast.
