SouthCoast Commuter Rail Will Be Free On Fridays This Summer
Some pretty big news for riders of the SouthCoast Commuter Rail. Governor Healey has announced that the commuter rail will be free on Fridays this summer.
A Growing Option for SouthCoast Commuters
Since its launch last year, the commuter rail has been a terrific option for people who live on the SouthCoast but work in Boston. Can the cost of riding the train to Boston get expensive? Absolutely, especially if you are commuting multiple days a week. Five commuting days usually means needing a monthly pass, which is not exactly cheap.
A Big Help For Interns and Young Workers
If you have an internship in Boston, it can be even harder. Summer internships during college can be very valuable. They can open doors and help you connect with major players in Boston, but they often come with a real financial cost.
Not only does it cost money to commute, but many interns are unpaid or only lightly compensated. That means you could be losing money by not having a paid summer job while also paying for transportation. The train is still more affordable than gas and Boston parking, but it adds up quickly.
Why the State is Offering Free Fridays
“We want to make using public transportation easier and more affordable for people, for our regular commuters, for residents going out to local businesses and restaurants, and for everyone enjoying the exciting events happening this summer,” said Governor Maura Healey. “That is why we are offering free commuter rail service on Fridays all summer long, saving people hundreds of dollars.”
Welcome Break for Commuters
It is a nice little break in a world that can feel expensive for the average person.
