It's been one month since the body of a UMass Dartmouth student and star athlete was found in the Acushnet River following an extensive search.

The death of Flordan "Flo" Bazile, 21, was totally unexpected and raised numerous questions, though the Bristol County District Attorney's Office said no foul play was suspected.

The UMass Dartmouth community quickly went into mourning.

The university held a celebration-of-life event in late January. Hundreds of students gathered to share their memories of the athlete who showed impressive effort as a track and field member.

Since Bazile's passing, many friends and loved ones have been honoring his life by keeping his name alive.

UMass Dartmouth Director of Athletics Lori Hendricks called the sudden passing of Bazile a devastating loss for the community. Hendricks said people will remember him as a beloved friend and teammate.

"He inspired those around him in many ways, from being a focused competitor to being a committed teammate and friend," Hendricks said.

"Flo was a gifted student and athlete. He brought light and love into a space. There was a warmth to him that was endearing. I am heartbroken by this loss."

Luisa Ribeiro, 21, of New Bedford, said her friendship with Bazile was special, dating back to middle school when they met.

"When I found out Flordan was also [at UMass Dartmouth], I was so grateful I could have someone I knew also in college with me," the New Bedford resident said.

"Flordan was the coolest person to be around because it was super easy to be full of joy around him. He also made people comfortable around him. His smile is unforgettable. He was very caring and loving."

She added, "I will also remember Flordan by the way he cared for people and the way he always brought joy into the room with his personality and smile."

Bazile was reported missing on Monday, January 15. He was last seen at Pine Dale Hall on the Old Westport Road campus around 2 a.m.

Bazile was named Little East Conference Track Athlete and Track Rookie Athlete of the Week for performances shortly before his death. His most recent time in the 200-meter was the third-best mark all-time at UMass Dartmouth, while his 60-meter effort was the second-best all-time for the Corsairs indoors.
