Five Displaced in Second New Bedford Weekend Fire
NEW BEDFORD — A fire in a New Bedford home has displaced five people in the South End, just one day after another fire in the city's North End displaced seven.
New Bedford's fire department wrote in a Facebook post that at around 4:16 p.m. Sunday, crews received multiple 911 calls reporting heavy smoke coming out of the back of a home at 150 Blackmer St.
District Chief James Fortin was the first to arrive at the scene, and reported smoke and fire coming out of the back of the three-story residence, with flames extending to the roof.
Firefighters were able to stop the blaze before it reached the attic, according to the department's post.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
Two adults and three children who lived on the second floor have been displaced and are being helped by the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Blackmer Street fire took place just a day after another fire on Beetle Street in the near North End, in which crews had to break the windows of a car that was blocking a fire hydrant.
Both incidents also took place just as National Public Safety Telecommunications Week — which honors emergency dispatchers in the second week of April — officially began.
