Fall River Sergeant Turns Five-Year-Old Girl’s Birthday Into a Heartwarming Memory
When five-year-old Ariel from Fall River dreamed of having a police escort to her birthday party, her grandmother Lisa Machado wanted to make it happen.
But when the department explained they couldn’t give rides to minors, one kind-hearted officer decided to go above and beyond.
Sergeant Derek Silver of the Fall River Police Department showed up at Ariel’s birthday party on October 11, giving her the surprise of a lifetime. For a little girl who’s been through more than most kids her age — battling illness since she was three and undergoing multiple surgeries — the gesture meant the world.

A Birthday to Remember
Ariel’s grandmother said the moment was nothing short of magical. Sgt. Silver not only attended the party but brought along a very special gift: his first police badge and his first department patch. Those keepsakes instantly became two of Ariel’s most treasured possessions.
“She will treasure that for the rest of her life,” Machado shared. “You have a special place in her heart, and words can’t say thank you enough for what you did.”
A Candle and a Thank You
A week after the party, Ariel and her grandmother visited the Fall River Police Department to thank Sgt. Silver in person. Wanting to return the kindness, Ariel picked out a few gifts for the sergeant — including, adorably, a candle.
“When I asked her what she wanted to get him, she said a candle,” Machado said with a laugh. “I told her, ‘Ariel, he’s a man, not a lady,’ but she was certain. She said, ‘No, Grandma, I want to get him a candle.’”
The Power of Simple Kindness
In a world where acts of kindness can feel rare, this heartfelt exchange between a young girl and a local police sergeant stands as a beautiful reminder of community, gratitude, and the impact of going the extra mile.
