Winter is here and when it gets cold people want to warm their cars before they get in them. But police in Fall River are warning residents that this may not be the best idea.

The Fall River police department's Facebook page is warning residents of several car thefts that have occurred recently. Thieves are making off with running vehicles that owners were simply trying to warm up.

The say motorists are leaving their cars running with the keys in them, making them easy targets for car theft.

They warn residents (and really anyone) to protect themselves and their property and make sure they are securing their vehicle before leaving it unattended.

Remote car starters may be the way to go. Or locking your car after you start it and having a second set of keys to let yourself back in.
