Fall River Police Officer Charged With Domestic Assault

FALL RIVER — A Fall River police officer has been put on leave and is charged with multiple counts of assault following a domestic dispute on Sunday morning.

Police said that at 9:18 a.m. Sunday, department supervisors responded to a dispute involving a police officer at the officer's home.

The department declined to identify the officer involved, although Fall River District Court documents show that police department employee Bryan Custadio, 30, was arraigned Monday on assault charges.

Custadio is a Fall River police detective who has been involved in numerous drugs-related arrests in the past few years.

After patrol sergeants investigated the dispute, the officer was arrested on multiple domestic assault-related offenses, according to police.

The alleged victim is an adult who will not be identified.

The department released a statement noting that the Office of Professional Standards and a supervisor from the Major Crimes Division are working with the Bristol County District Attorney's Office on a follow-up investigation.

Police said the employee has been placed on leave, although they did not specify if it is paid or unpaid leave.

"While it is particularly concerning that an officer is being charged with a crime, it is important to note that a thorough and impartial investigation is being conducted in to this matter," read the department's statement.

According to court documents, Custadio was arraigned Monday morning on three counts of assault and battery on a family or household member as well as threatening to commit a crime.

Two of the assault and battery counts stem from prior incidents that took place in October, documents note.

A 1992 study of self-reported violence in law enforcement families in the U.S. revealed around 40% of officers reported some type of physical aggression, around four times the rate in the general population.

Police took a department-issued firearm and four personal weapons from Custadio when he was arrested, the incident report states.

The alleged victim has taken out a restraining order against him.

A not guilty plea was automatically entered on his behalf.

He has been released on personal recognizance and is due back in court for a hearing on Feb. 8, 2022.
