All of Fall River is buzzing about the latest season of the hit Netflix series Monster, this time titled Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story. It has been eagerly anticipated for months, with many hoping for a less sensationalistic telling of the story of Lizzie, the murders of her father and stepmother, and her trial that followed.

However, anyone hoping for that has obviously never seen a Ryan Murphy show.

The creator and longtime producer of American Horror Story has never let facts get in the way of a good story, and it seems Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, which premiered today on the streamer, is no exception. He fills his shows with gore, sex, and most notably, his own version of true-life events.

Ryan Murphy’s Signature Style Triggers Sudden Local Cancellation

Apparently some of those extra ingredients were enough for one Fall River restaurant to cancel its planned watch party for tonight.

Barrett’s Waterfront was planning on screening the first episode of the series tonight at 7 p.m. for an event called “40 Whacks with Pours and Snacks,” complete with themed cocktails and snacks, but decided to cancel the event after seeing what the series was like.

What Barrett’s Waterfront Said About the Premiere

“After previewing the first episode this morning, we’ve decided 40 Whacks is probably better enjoyed from the comfort (and privacy ) of your own home,” Barrett’s Waterfront posted to social media. “So tonight’s watch party is officially canceled. We’re sorry for the last minute change and appreciate everyone who was planning to join us!”

Viewing the episode in a public setting might have led to some very awkward moments (I once sat next to a guy on a plane watching Murphy’s Nip/Tuck on an iPad, so I get it), but that doesn’t mean Barrett’s wants you to miss out.

Streaming at Home Is the New Public Watch Party

“Consider this our official recommendation to pour yourself a drink, lock the doors, and watch this one from the couch.,” the restaurant posted.

Lizzie Borden's Maplecroft in Fall River, Massachusetts

UPDATE: Maplecroft's new owners moved in on July 19, 2022 – Lizzie Borden's 162nd birthday. This is now a private residence, please do not trespass on their property.

While the house where Lizzie Borden's father and stepmother were brutally murdered on August 4, 1892 may have recently been purchased, the home where she moved after being acquitted for those same murders is on the market for anyone looking to own a piece of Fall River history.
