Fall River Planning Inclusive Playground For Children of All Abilities
A heartfelt family journey is inspiring a major new project that could change how children play together across Fall River. Mae’s Playground is being planned as a fully inclusive playground designed so children of all abilities can play side by side.
The playground is being led by Fall River resident Marcel Reilly, who said the project grew out of personal experiences with his daughter, who is autistic and nonverbal, and his girlfriend’s ongoing battle with stage four cancer. Reilly said the family’s challenges helped inspire a mission to create something meaningful for the community.
Where Mae’s Playground Will Be Built
The playground is planned for Abbott Court Park in Fall River. The park already features a skate park, basketball court and baseball fields. However, a traditional playground was removed about two years ago due to safety concerns, leaving an opportunity for a new inclusive space.
Why Inclusive Playgrounds Matter
Reilly said Mae’s Playground is being designed so children on the autism spectrum and children without disabilities can play side-by-side together on the same equipment. He said social interaction is critical for development, noting that children learn more when playing with peers than when playing alone.

The playground will include sensory equipment such as communication boards, braille features and specialized play panels. The Flutie Foundation has already committed to supporting communication and accessibility components.
How the Community Is Helping Fund the Project
The project has already secured nearly four hundred thousand dollars in funding, including approval from city officials and community preservation funding. Reilly said organizers are working to raise additional money through grants and donations to complete the project and include additional specialized features.

A fundraiser is scheduled for April 11 at the Fall River Elks Club from four to eight in the evening. The event will include music, food, auctions and family friendly activities designed to welcome children of all abilities. Tickets and more information are available on the Mae's Playground website.
