Fairhaven’s Former VFW Gets New Life as Sail House Tavern
A beloved and familiar SouthCoast couple is back in the hospitality game, and this time, they’re bringing new life to a longtime Fairhaven staple.
Howie and Linda Plaud, the former owners of Captain Bonney’s Ice Cream in Rochester and The Highlander in Acushnet, have officially purchased the Fairhaven VFW on Middle Street and are transforming it into a new bar and restaurant called Sail House Tavern.
“We’re ready for our next venture,” said Linda, who, along with her husband Howie and their children, is leading the transformation of the well-known building directly across from the Seaport Inn.
From VFW to Nautical Neighborhood Hangout
The idea to open Sail House Tavern came quickly and naturally after the Plauds learned the VFW was up for sale.
“We had DJ’d events and fundraisers there for years,” Linda said. “It was even the spot for our 40th anniversary vow renewal. So when the topic of selling came up after a fundraiser for former commander Jeff Cardoza, we jumped on it.”

By the following Monday, they had already shaken hands on the deal.
The name Sail House Tavern was born from Linda’s desire for something nautical to reflect the town’s coastal charm. Though “Fairhaven Sail House” was considered, it didn’t quite give off the bar-and-grill vibe they envisioned.
Renovation in Full Swing
The Plauds aren’t wasting any time.
Renovations are well underway with new flooring, demolition of the old bar, and a reconfiguration of the hall to create a cozier, 99-person capacity venue that doesn’t require sprinkler installation, at least for now.
“We’re starting small but mighty,” said Linda, who shared that the bifold doors separating the spaces are already down. The new setup will feature a larger bar, a small stage, and a dance floor to host live events.

Entertainment Every Night of the Week
Sail House Tavern aims to keep Fairhaven entertained seven days a week.
“We’re planning everything from karaoke and dancing to line dancing, comedy, paint parties. You name it,” Linda said.
And yes, the Plauds plan to be back behind the DJ booth, joined by their son Alex, keeping the local entertainment/nightlife scene alive with music and community events.
Food and Drink With a Twist
While the kitchen requires significant upgrades to meet full-service standards, the plan is to open with a creative, light menu featuring items like lobster rolls, paninis and chowder.
“Nothing fried or cooked with gas for now, just food that can be made with electric appliances,” Linda explained.
As for the outside, expect a refresh with paint, updated landscaping and sealed driveways.
Fairhaven, Meet Sail House Tavern
While licensing and inspections are still underway, the Plauds are eyeing a late July or early August opening.
“We’re hitting the ground running,” Linda said. “It’s bittersweet for sure, but it’s also exciting. This is our next chapter and we want the community to be part of it.”
As the summer progresses, Fairhaven residents can follow along with renovations and updates through Linda’s upcoming social media posts, and stay tuned for more details as the grand opening approaches.
