Rochester’s Captain Bonney’s Creamery Under New Ownership
After 14 years of scooping cones and serving smiles, Amber Romero has officially taken over as the new owner of Captain Bonney’s Creamery in Rochester, a place that’s long felt like home.
Romero's journey with Captain Bonney’s began the very year it opened.
“I worked there for eight years,” she said. “In 2020, the previous owners offered me the opportunity to buy the business. I ran it for five years, and now we’ve been able to purchase the property outright. I’m really grateful.”
Taking ownership during the height of the pandemic was no easy feat, but Romero stuck with it. Since then, business has only continued to grow.
A Nod to Love and Ice Cream
Romero shares ownership of the property with her husband, who works in construction.
“He does dirt, I do ice cream,” she joked.
The duo even has a fun nod to that balance in the form of a top-selling kids’ sundae – the “Worms and Dirt” – featuring chocolate ice cream, hot fudge, crushed Oreos and gummy worms.
“I made it to impress him when we first met,” she said.
Captain Bonney’s, located at 258 New Bedford Road in Rochester, officially reopened for the season on March 27 and is already off to a strong start.
“We had a great opening day,” Romero said. “This week has really been our first streak of beautiful weather, and it’s been busy.”
More Than Just Frozen Treats
Captain Bonney’s also serves hot dogs, lobster rolls, wraps, paninis and even a few Portuguese favorites. According to Romero, the top food sellers are the hot dogs and lobster rolls. As for ice cream, her personal favorite is salted caramel, sourced from Acushnet Creamery. The shop also carries flavors from Gifford’s in Maine.
Looking ahead, themed months are on the horizon, including a Rodeo Week complete with country music and cowboy-inspired treats.
Romero and Her Crew Scoop Success Together
Romero’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed by her team. The staff recently shared a heartfelt post on the shop’s Facebook page:
“Congratulations to our boss and now official owner, Amber!
Amber has worked here at Captain Bonney’s for 14 years as an employee, boss, and now owner! She’s always been a crucial part in this business and we have no doubt she will continue to take great care of your loved Captain Bonney's!
While focusing on keeping Bonney’s a great place for family and friends, she recently also became a mom herself this past January! We are so proud of her dedication to being a great mom and boss!”
Community First
Romero’s message to the SouthCoast community is simple.
“We’re here for our community. We invite families to come enjoy our play area, our food, and fast, friendly service," she said. "We can’t wait to serve everyone this summer.”
