Fairhaven Man to Face Charges After Mental Health Episode

FAIRHAVEN (WBSM) — A Fairhaven man will face charges after attempting to gain entry into a West Island home with a hammer during a mental health episode.

Fairhaven Police Lt. Kevin Kobza said officers responded at about 4:45 a.m. this morning to a report of a man using a hammer to try and gain entry into a sliding glass door of a home on Ebony Street.

Officers arrived to find a 56-year-old Fairhaven man who Kobza said was “suffering a mental health emergency.” He said the man has a history of mental illness and is known to police.

Kobza said officers ordered the man to drop the hammer and he complied. He then fled from police but was later located and taken by ambulance to a local hospital to undergo a mental health evaluation.

His name is not being released at this time.

The man never made entry into the home and no injuries were reported, Kobza said.

The man will face charges including vandalism and disorderly conduct, and Kobza said the investigation remains active and ongoing.
