Fairhaven Boxer Will Compete At New England Golden Gloves Tournament

On Saturday night, Fairhaven heavyweight boxer Josh Parker got his hand raised in front of hundreds of fans at the PAL in Fall River as he became a two-time Southern New England Golden Gloves champion.

The 19-year-old will now advance to Lowell where he will compete for the chance to become the All New England Golden Gloves champion.

Meet Josh Parker

Parker’s journey started when he was 13, when he had a desire to lose weight and develop healthier habits. Six years later, it has become more than just fitness. It has become his lifestyle.

Back in February of last year, Parker secured a decision victory in the finals of the sub-novice division. Since then, he has graduated from Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational-Technical High School and has moved up to the novice division, giving him a chance to face tougher competition and a chance at the All New England title.

With the help of his gym, Parker is more motivated than ever to get another prestigious win.

Parker Advances to Lowell

Parker has been training under the guidance of Mike Bryant at Love’s Boxing in Fall River since June, and he attributes his evolving talent to Bryant.

“He knows the game very well, he’s a very technical coach,” Parker said. “He brought me up another level to really take things up a notch and I feel like my skills have been progressively growing. I definitely owe it to him.”

While a dedicated coach is important, no one is as invested as Parker’s father.

“I got my dad in my corner now and that definitely helps me push a little harder,” Parker said.

After three intense rounds, Parker won a split decision.

“It was a good scrap, definitely my toughest fight to date,” he said. “My opponent was game to fight; it was a back-and-forth battle.”

Parker was blessed to have 60 of his closest friends and family members in the crowd, making the victory that much sweeter.

“It’s amazing to have support like that,” he said. “It definitely puts the pressure on, but to know that I have that support, it makes everything a bit more special.”
