FAIRHAVEN (WBSM) — Two adults and a child were sent to the hospital following a structure fire in Fairhaven early this morning caused by an overloaded extension cord.

According to Fairhaven Fire Chief Todd Correia, the fire department responded at about 4:10 a.m. today to a report of a possible structure fire at 215 Main Street.

Crews arrived to find heavy smoke on the first floor. Correia said the investigation revealed that the contents of the living room had caught fire. The residents were alerted by smoke detectors, and one of the residents attempted to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher.

Correia said the fire crews were able to get the fire under control by 4:20 a.m., and then remained on the scene to perform salvage operations and cleared the location at 6:11 a.m.

The first-floor occupants were displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross. Fairhaven Animal Control has taken possession of two cats until the family is able to relocate.

Two adults and one child were transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford for smoke inhalation.

Correia said the cause of the fire was an extension cord that was overloaded and too close to combustible material. He estimated structural damage to be between $5,000-$10,000.
