Elderly Man Hospitalized in Fall River Fire

FALL RIVER — An elderly man was taken to the hospital and another resident evacuated after their two-family Fall River home caught fire on Monday afternoon.

Acting Deputy Fire Chief Ron Sevigny said that the 85-year-old man was assisted out of the first floor home at 21 Marchand St. after the blaze was reported just after 3 p.m. on Monday.

He was taken to the hospital, and his current condition is unknown.

The woman who lives on the second floor was able to evacuate, Sevigny said.

Both residents are the only people living in the building, which was severely damaged.

Fire crews arrived three minutes after the call to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the first and second floors.

They were able to put out the fire in around 20 minutes and remained on scene for around an hour, according to the acting deputy chief.

Sevigny said that the damage to the home was estimated to be around $100,000, and that the residents are being assisted by city services.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, although it is thought to have started on the first floor.
