FAIRHAVEN (WBSM) — School is canceled for the East Fairhaven School this morning after a fire broke out in the building last night.

According to the Fairhaven Fire Department, crews responded to Box 281 at the school at 7:25 p.m. on September 22.

Firefighters arrived and determined there was smoke and heat detector activation on the second floor, in Rooms 232 and 240. They located a fire on the exterior wall of Room 232 and were able to put it out with their water extinguisher.

The department said the sprinkler system did not activate.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but it is believed to have been caused by a dual-blade window fan plugged into an outlet on that exterior wall.

Firefighters remained on the scene due to the smoke condition on the second floor requiring prolonged ventilation, the department said. Fairhaven Public Schools administration, maintenance and ServPro arrived on the scene to help with the damage.

As a result of the fire, the school is closed to all students and staff today. Additional updates are expected later in the day.
