Westport Dogs Are Helping Veterans Fight PTSD
A Mission To Give Back
More than a decade ago, Katie Howd and her husband Tom made a decision to give back. While neither had served in the military, they had deep ties to veterans and felt many were not receiving the support they deserved, especially those dealing with PTSD.
The husband and wife team landed on an idea to help military veterans to get paired up with support dogs, and Toka’s Friends was born. Unlike some organizations, Toka’s Friends does not rely on rescue dogs. After early challenges with health and behavioral issues, the group chose Labradors for their temperament, intelligence, and strong desire to please. The Lab puppies come from a breeder in Lakeville.
How The Dogs Are Trained
The training process is personal and intensive. Katie’s son, Mike, a professional dog trainer, raises each dog from just eight weeks old, keeping them in his home for up to two years. This hands-on approach ensures the dogs are well prepared before being paired with a veteran.
Each dog is carefully selected and trained to meet the specific needs of the veteran they will eventually support.
Helping Veterans In Real Time
One of the most powerful aspects of the program is how the dogs are trained to recognize signs of anxiety. Many veterans with PTSD have subtle behaviors, or “tells,” when stress is building. The dogs learn to recognize these signals and immediately respond to their owners with comfort.
A Lasting Bond
While the dogs leave their trainer’s home after many months, the connection never fades. Toka’s Friends stays closely connected with every veteran and dog duo, hosting events and providing ongoing support.
How You Can Help
Toka’s Friends continues to grow, but expansion depends on funding. The organization is preparing for its annual golf tournament, its largest fundraiser of the year, and is seeking both participants and sponsors. The tournament will be on Monday, June 8 at the Allendale Country Club in Dartmouth.
