Dartmouth Police: Stop Stealing Political Yard Signs
With just over a month to go before election day, we're rounding home on one of the most contentious presidential contests in American history. However, the political friction extends far beyond the national level, seeping down into statewide races, and even poisoning town contests.
Other than prognosticating on Facebook echo chambers, supporters of political figures are starting to misbehave in real life. Here on the SouthCoast, political fanatics on both sides are acting out in ways that are starting to get the attention of local law enforcement. Dartmouth Police say that sign stealing and threats are becoming a real problem.
"From stolen property to heated threats, it seems the 'election season' has everyone feeling a little too passionate," read a Dartmouth Police post on Facebook. "There’s really no need to snatch signs from someone's yard or start a showdown with a neighbor who has different views. If you’re that fired up about your candidate, channel that energy into the ballot box, and not into bickering on the front lawn."
Dartmouth Police were quick to point out that the problem definitely does not lie with one political party. The problem is definitely on both sides. "Now, before you start thinking, 'This must be about THOSE supporters', let’s be clear: this message is for EVERYONE, regardless of which side you’re on."
The police wrapped up their Facebook post with a plea for all voters to act like adults. "It’s simply meant to be a reminder that voting is the ultimate power move, while larceny and assault is definitely NOT. So, let’s stick to that and leave the sign-snatching and squabbling behind."
