Dartmouth Police Arrest Man After Early-Morning Standoff

A Dartmouth man is in custody after an early-morning standoff with police in which he had barricaded himself inside his Fenton Street home with a firearm.

According to Dartmouth Police, officers responded at about 5:07 this morning to 1 Fenton Street after receiving a call of several men fighting.

Officers arrived to find one of the men had barricaded himself inside the residence with a firearm that they say he allegedly brandished during the altercation.

Dartmouth Police attempted to have the man leave the residence, but to no avail. The Southeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council SWAT team was then called in, and after “extended negotiations” with the man, police said, he exited the residence without incident.

Derrick Paine, 40, of that address was placed under arrest and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and carrying a firearm without a license. He also had an outstanding warrant for motor vehicle offenses.

Dartmouth Police said the investigation is ongoing.

“I am extremely pleased that there were no injuries as a result of this man’s foolish and careless actions,” Dartmouth Police Chief Brian P. Levesque said. “I applaud the actions of every officer involved in this incident, as it could have ended much differently."
