It will be safe to cross the streets in Fall River this coming school year.

Crossing guards will be on duty starting the first day of school on September 9th.

According to WJAR 10, Mayor Sam Sutter cut city crossing guard positions to save the city more than $180,000. The cuts were made to balance a budget that was short $6.5 million.

Sutter stated that even though crossing guards are cut from the budget, the city is committed to solve the issue.

After everything was settled, “the mayor allocated $225,000 to the police department, which pays for the program.”

Police Chief Daniel Racine stated that school crossing guards play an important role in public safety before and after school hours.

However, the funding is only for this upcoming school year and there could be a possible issue in the near future.
