The New Bedford City Council hopes to hear from public school teachers Thursday night, concerning disciplinary issues within the schools.

Councillor-At-Large Brian Gomes says he still hears about troubling behavior from students within the high school and middle schools, and wants to get to the bottom of it, "Every day we hear of incidents. There's many things the public is not aware (of) if it does not make it into the media."

Gomes says teachers should not feel threatened to tell the truth, and they have his support. "They have the freedom of speech, and they will be heard. And I will stand alongside of them, and we will expose wherever the threat comes from," Gomes said.

The Committee on Public Safety has also invited Superintendent Pia Durkin, and a number of administrators and public safety officials to the meeting. The meeting begins at 7pm Thursday night in the City Council Chambers at City Hall.
