The first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine arrived in New Bedford late Wednesday morning. The announcement was made by Mayor Jon Mitchell.

Speaking with WBSM's Barry Richard, Mitchell said inoculations have already started at St. Luke's Hospital.

"The staff over there is already getting inoculated, it's happening already. That's a very positive sign," said Mitchell.

Mitchell said healthcare workers will be inoculated first. After that, said Mitchell, "it will be the most vulnerable folks, people above a certain age with established, underlying health conditions and we'll go from there."

Mitchell says more than 91 percent of the coronavirus-related deaths in New Bedford have been people over the age of 60.
