As many tend to their gardens and maintain their lawns, you may be looking for something new to add a special touch to your space.

You're not alone. Cape Cod craftsman David Harrington had the same thought years ago and his solution came in the form of a plant hanger.

Now, I know what you're thinking. The main focus is typically the plants themselves and not the hangers. David had the same thought initially. "They care about the plant or the bird feeder or the chimes or whatever," he said.

His late partner proved him wrong. She told him people would care – especially if it's made well – something they hadn't found at traditional home improvement stores.

The First Creation: A Cape Cod Original

"I have a friend that owned a metal shop in Dennis," Harrington said, which gave him a place to build and material to use.

His first creation was that of Cape Cod itself. "I was pretty proud of myself. Took me about a month to figure out how to do it or what I was going to do with it," Harrington said.

Then, the unthinkable happened.

Going Viral on Facebook

"We put it on Facebook and all hell broke loose," Harrington said. The popularity grew – and so did the orders.

Crafting a Local Success Story

Harrington started with 100 hangers which he took to local craft shows. He quickly sold out.

That was 10 years ago. Today, he's sold over 25,000 Harrington Hangers.

You can order your favorite off the website and even see them in person at Mahoney's Building Supply in Mattapoisett.

Each hanger is made from 12-gauge cold rolled steel. "It's about an eighth of an inch thick. When you're holding about three pounds, they're heavy duty," Harrington said.

Stylish Steel

His works of art are not only durable, they're customizable. Whether it's a hanger paying tribute to the armed forces or showing off your favorite sports team, Harrington Hangers has it all.

Butterflies, humming birds and more nature can be displayed on your hanger.

Have a favorite activity? That's available, too. Images of golf, kids playing soccer and much more can be ordered.

Personally, I love his collection of the New England states.

"On each of the state ones, we carve out the state as much detail as we can and then we add a little silver magnetic heart," Harrington said. It's a great way to show your love for your hometown.

What started as a pipedream quickly became a labor of love, with each piece carefully crafted with the intention of providing quality and a long-lasting piece that will be treasured for years to come.
