Brockton Man Faces Murder Charge After Allegedly Running Over Pedestrian

BROCKTON (WBSM) — A Brockton man has been ordered held without bail on a murder charge after allegedly fatally hitting a pedestrian with his car.

Vasco Semedo, 45, pleaded not guilty to one count of murder and negligent operation of a motor vehicle, and was held without bail.

On Saturday, April 6, at 8:53 a.m., Brockton Police responded to 65 North Main Street for a motor vehicle crash involving a pedestrian. Upon arrival, police said Semedo was detained by people at the scene.

The male victim, identified as Stuart Smith, 50, was unresponsive on the road in front of the vehicle. He was medflighted to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Surveillance footage shows that Semedo was operating a Toyota RAV 4 when he allegedly struck Smith. It is alleged he backed up and drove into the victim again before exiting the vehicle. Police said Semedo also struck Smith more than 20 times with a brick as he lay on the ground.

The Plymouth District Attorney's office said it is unclear if Semedo and Smith knew each other before the incident.

Semedo's next court appearance is scheduled for May 14.
