The notice of the black whales near New Bedford was made public by ML Baron of the West Island Weather Station in Fairhaven. Baron posted that it is very rare to have Black Whales this close to Buzzards Bay and New Bedford Harbor at this time of year. he added that whales have been seen in the region in February and March, and even occasionally swim through the Cape Cod Canal.

The Coast Guard asks any mariners or those of us on land who may see a breaching whale to report it to them immediately. The whales can be in danger if not seen by the large boast and cargo ships that pass through Buzzards Bay.
