Lake George in New York
Nicknamed the Queen of American Lakes, Lake George boasts more than 300 islands and 100 miles of shoreline. It's among the clearest and most scenic lakes in the country, ranking in the site's top three.
Located about four hours from the SouthCoast, Lake George offers boating, hiking, swimming, and a vibrant local tourism scene.
New Hampshire’s Hidden Gems
Just three hours north in New Hampshire are two more pristine lakes.
Newfound Lake is the cleanest and deepest lake in New Hampshire, known for its crystal-clear water and peaceful setting.
Lake Winnipesaukee is the other. Nestled at the base of the White Mountains, it’s a hub for water sports, great restaurants, and even movie trivia – it was the fictional setting of the film What About Bob?, though filming happened in Virginia.
These lakes offer safe, clear swimming and great weekend getaway options, especially while Massachusetts battles algae blooms.
