MassWildlife is working hard getting ready for the time of year so many of us look forward to: fishing season.

Trout Stocking Across Massachusetts

Over 450 rivers, ponds, streams and lakes across Massachusetts will be stocked with more than 400,000 trout this spring.

"Without stocking, most people would never catch or see trout in Massachusetts," MassWildlife said.

Their trout stocking program allows communities to enjoy a simple pastime and provide a safe source of fish as food.

First Releases of 2026 Fishing Season

"The first fish were stocked yesterday in the southeast, with other regions of the state following soon as weather and water conditions allow," the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife shared.

Fishermen, get ready. MassWildlife said that "this year’s fish are bigger and better than ever."

Fishing License Requirements

A freshwater fishing license is required for those 15 years and older and there are daily limitations on how many trout you can take. Licenses are free for residents ages 15 to 17 and age 70 and above.

Local Ponds Already Stocked

A few local ponds have already been stocked like Mary's Pond in Rochester and Long Pond in Plymouth.

You can also view a full list of local waterbodies scheduled to be stocked in 2026 on the MassWildlife website.
