Acushnet’s NRDC Room Brings Nordic Wellness to the SouthCoast
Ever see an Instagram Reel or TikTok of people plunging themselves into icy waters after a vigorous workout?
Well, if you've ever wanted to give it a try, Acushnet is about to get a brand-new wellness destination designed to help the body and mind recharge.
On Sunday, September 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., owners Jake Bateman and Erin Souza will officially open the doors to NRDC Room (pronounced “Nordic”), located at 132 South Main Street in Acushnet, behind Kam’s Cuisine.
A Rustic Sanctuary for Recovery
From the outside, you’ll notice the blackout shades that keep the interior tucked away in mystery. Step inside, however, and the vibe changes instantly. Wood floors, greenery, and a rustic, comfortable atmosphere greet visitors, setting the stage for a holistic wellness experience.
NRDC Room specializes in contrast therapy – a combination of infrared sauna and cold plunge sessions – designed to boost circulation, reduce inflammation, improve sleep, and aid in muscle recovery. Whether you’re an athlete, someone recovering from an injury, or simply looking to reduce stress, the sauna and plunge options allow members to tailor their experience to their own wellness needs.
“Plunges are great for muscle recovery and inflammation, while saunas help with detox and circulation,” Bateman explained. “Some people like to alternate between the two. A 60-second plunge alone can give you more of a jolt than six cups of coffee.”
More Than Just a Workout Boost
Bateman, who personally incorporates sauna and plunge into his fitness routine, said the goal is to make recovery a part of everyday health. Sessions can be done up to three or four times per week and work best when they become part of a regular schedule.
For those intimidated by the icy plunge, NRDC Room’s motto says it all:
“You have to be comfortable being uncomfortable.”
A Community Grand Opening
The grand opening celebration is open to the public. Guests can tour the space, meet the owners, and learn more about memberships. The first 20 members will receive 20 percent off, and visitors can also expect music, refreshments, giveaways and merch, while supplies last.
While the saunas and plunges won’t be in use on opening day, attendees can get a sneak peek at the equipment and book sessions for the following week.

Bateman said the name “Nordic” pays tribute to the region where contrast therapy first gained popularity.
“We wanted to bring that tradition here to the SouthCoast in a way that blends ancient wellness with modern recovery," he said.
All that's left to say is: Are you ready to take the dip?
