Acushnet Elementary School Recognized With National Achievement

Acushnet Elementary School students and staff have much to celebrate.

The school was recognized Jan. 25 as one of only two in Massachusetts to receive a distinguished designation from the National Association of ESEA State Program Administrators. ESEA is short for Elementary and Secondary Education Act.

Students filing into the cafeteria were greeted by prestigious Massachusetts leaders: Secretary of Education Patrick Tutwiler, Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Jeffrey C. Riley, Deputy Commissioner of Education Dr. Regina Robinson, Sen. Mark Montigny, Rep. Paul Schmid and Rep. William Straus.

Acushnet was recognized for the success of its academic growth and student performance.

“I’m thrilled that Acushnet Elementary has received this prestigious designation – proud of our students, our families and our amazing staff," Acushnet Superintendent Dr. Paula J. Bailey said. "Becoming a Distinguished School does not happen overnight or by chance. It is the result of focus, persistence and teamwork by our staff and students. I am incredibly proud of everyone involved in the collective effort to earn Acushnet Elementary this national recognition.”

The National ESEA Distinguished Schools Program recognizes qualifying federally funded schools for positive educational advances and the outstanding academic achievement of students.

The celebration included a welcome from School Committee Chair Jennifer Downing and Principal Leah Chesney, and a word from Assistant Principal Julianna Pasetto, who introduced Acushnet Elementary's student ambassadors.

“All of us at AES are truly honored to be named a Distinguished School,” Chesney said. “What a wonderful way to celebrate the hard work of the students and staff over the past few years.”

One by one, the young ambassadors stepped up to the microphone with their top 10 reasons the school is a wonderful place to learn and thrive. Sunny, the school's comfort dog, was given special attention.

“Acushnet Elementary School staff, students, and families should be proud of what they have accomplished,” Commissioner Riley said.

A highlight video was shown and the celebration concluded with a group photo.

Well done and kudos to the Acushnet school system, especially the elementary students, staff and committee members for a job well done.
