7 Places to Watch Sunday’s Powerboat Races for Free
The owner of the Borden Light Marina, Michael Lund, organized the Offshore Powerboat Association Races, which will take place from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., Sunday on the Taunton River.
Down below are seven places where you can catch the races.
1. Lower Kennedy Park. Enter from Bay Street and take a paved street up to a big, unpaved parking lot. There are trees along the edge of the bluff that can block your view of the water. There are then two steep, rocky paths to a beach.
2. Ferry Street and Water Street. It is not a good idea, but you can peek through condominiums and factories to get glimpses of the water. However, there will be cars and trucks rushing behind you.
3. Heritage State Park. There is a picnic grove under trees on the lawn north of the Heritage Park headquarters.
4. Boardwalk, Davol Street. A section of the boardwalk will be open at The Cove Restaurant along Davol Street. However, there is no parking nearby, but you can still get a good view.
5. Bicentennial Park. The park is located just north of the spot where the boats turn around. Parking is limited, but there is plenty of shade and a Jerry Remy’s nearby in case you get hungry or thirsty.
6. Somerset, Angus Street. The other side of the river in Somerset offers views that will be clear of any blind spots. Two spots on Angus Street will allow those to view the event from a public beach. However, parking will be a major problem. There are spots for only about eight cars and those who park illegally will have their cars towed if parked on Saturday and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be parking on nearby streets, such as Ripley Street, Massasoit Street, Pocasset Street, Anawan Street, O’Neill Road and Carey Street.
7. Riverside Avenue, north of the Braga Bridge, south of the Veterans Memorial Bridge. There are paths that lead to a rocky beach that will be north of the race route. In this spot, you can be able to watch the boats turn around there. However, there is very limited parking.
