If you are in the interviewing process for a new job or will be soon, what you think might be the best outfit choice may end up costing you the job.

I came across a great article at Monster.com about what NOT to wear when you are going on job interviews.  I thought it would be a great list to share with our Southcoast workforce :)

1) Nothing too fitted; maybe you haven't tried on your trusty black pants suit in, oh, a year or so.  Last year you were 15 pounds thinner and that go to suit is going to be too tight!  Potential hires don't want to see buttons on blouses popping and jackets splitting at the seams because you can fit into them.  Be prepared and try on your interview outfit in advance.

2) Stay away from overly casual clothes; even if the business or company is a relaxed, laid back operation, you'll want to avoid wearing sneakers, jeans and a t-shirt.  A potential employer does want to see that you are capable of putting together a business casual outfit.

3) Don't wear distracting clothes; so anything to bright or neon colored is a no no.  Also, try to stick with subtle colors and patterns.  Don't go for the crazy designs or checks and stripes.  For the ladies, nothing to revealing or low cut; nobody needs to know what you've got going on under your clothes.

4)  Over accessorizing; don't worry about over doing it with all the extra stuff, simple is best.  A small pair of studs, watch and wedding ring/band, if you wear jewelry.  If distracted by too many accessories, your interviewer could assume you are what you wear, a distraction.

5) Ask about interview attire; it can't hurt to ask the contact what type of attire you should wear.  Something like this..."I was wondering if business casual dress would be ok for my upcoming interview?"  They'll then let you know, yes that will be fine or they may say that it would be a good idea to wear a suit or dress for the interview.  And if you stray away from what they suggested, it could hurt your chances.

Go get em, good luck!
